Rugeley Couple Kick 50-year Smoking Habit

A couple from Rugeley who have been smoking for over 50 years have successfully kicked their habit with the help of the NHS stop smoking clinic.

Pensioners, Jean and Alan Gratton who had previously smoked between 20 and 30 cigarettes a day were referred to Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Partnership NHS Trust's smoking cessation service 'Time to Quit', following a hospital visit to review Alan's weak lungs.

The couple attended the 12 week stop smoking clinic at Cannock Fire Station in an attempt to stop smoking and get healthier together.

Alan Gratton, 75, a retired lorry driver, who smoked roll up cigarettes throughout his working life, said "I've got bad lungs and the last time I went to hospital it frightened me, which gave me the idea to give up smoking and I'm glad I've given up."

His wife Jean, 72, who often smoked heavily in the evenings with a cup of tea, added: "I gave up to support Alan. It wasn't fair for me to smoke around him when he was so ill. The clinic and our advisor have been brilliant I would recommend it to anyone."

Councillor Muriel Davis, Portfolio Leader for Health and Wellbeing said "I am delighted to hear about the success of this local couple. Smoking is a difficult habit to break, as I know only too well. It shows that with expert advice and support, even those who have been smoking long term can quit. Well done Alan and Jean."

The couple who are now smoke free, enjoying spending time together and being more active in their garden and are noticing lots of benefits after giving up the cigarettes with support from expert advisors.

Jean said: "Being able to talk to a specialist adviser was brilliant. It gave me the confidence to fight my nicotine cravings and succeed. But we've also noticed that the house smells different, we haven't got smoke on the walls or in the curtains and food tastes so much better."
